Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery of the Colon and Rectum

Laparoscopic surgery is also known as minimally invasive surgery. Instead of requiring a larger single incision typical of “open” traditional surgical methods, laparoscopic surgery uses 0.5-1cm incisions, or ports.

Specialized instruments and a camera called a laparoscope are passed through tubes inserted into the ports. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to provide the surgeon adequate viewing and working space. The laparoscope transmits high-resolution digital images to video monitors in the operating room. The surgeon uses the monitors to manipulate the instruments and perform the surgery.

Robotic surgery is similar to laparoscopic surgery.

During robotic surgery, your surgeon performs surgery using a computer program that remotely controls very small instruments attached to a robot. Under the surgeon's direction, the robot matches the doctor's hand movements to perform the procedure using the tiny instruments.
